Why We Built This Dataset

If you're a UK business trying to report your carbon footprint, especially your Scope 2 electricity emissions, there's something you quickly discover: the data you need is often frustratingly hard to find.

Ofgem requires every licensed electricity supplier to submit and publish their fuel mix and carbon intensity data annually. But while that sounds straightforward, the reality is more scattered. The data is buried in PDFs, hidden on hard-to-navigate corporate websites, or completely missing in action. There's no single place to get a clean, standardised list of supplier-specific emissions factors for a given reporting year.

So, we built one.

We’ve now published a public, free-to-use dataset of 2024 electricity supplier emissions factors, covering both fuel mix and grams of CO₂e per kilowatt-hour. You can find it here:
👉 UK Electricity Supplier Emissions Factors – 2024

This dataset is part of Emitrics’ mission to make carbon accounting faster, easier and more accurate, particularly for Scope 3 and Scope 2 emissions that depend on supplier-specific factors.

Why Supplier-Specific Factors Matter

In carbon accounting, using a “market-based” approach for Scope 2 emissions means reflecting the actual emissions associated with the electricity your supplier provides. This is different from the “location-based” method, which just uses a national average emissions factor.

Market-based reporting is more precise and increasingly expected. If your supplier offers a 100% renewable tariff, your reported emissions may be close to zero. But if you’re on a fossil-heavy mix, your Scope 2 emissions will be much higher. Getting this right matters for:

  • CSRD, SECR, and GHG Protocol reporting
  • Meeting Science-Based Targets
  • Procurement decisions and supplier evaluations
  • Your reputation with customers and investors

And yet, many businesses are stuck using out-of-date or generic national factors simply because supplier-specific data is too painful to gather.

A Better Starting Point for UK Businesses

This isn’t just a nice-to-have, this is the kind of information that should be available by default. The emissions of the electricity you buy shouldn’t be a mystery, and reporting them shouldn’t be a chore.

We’ve compiled the 2024 data for nearly every major UK business electricity supplier. Each entry includes:

  • Supplier name
  • Fuel mix percentages
  • Carbon intensity (gCO₂e/kWh)
  • Source and link to disclosure page

This makes it faster for any business, especially SMEs and consultancies without big in-house sustainability teams, to move from estimation to accuracy. Whether you’re using Emitrics or another platform, the dataset is open and downloadable.

Why Emitrics Cares About This

At Emitrics, our platform helps businesses track their carbon footprint using data they already have, primarily financial transactions. But the power of that approach only grows when we can layer on more specific, accurate emissions data over time.

That’s why we’ve designed our system to progressively refine carbon estimates: starting with default sector averages, and then moving to supplier- and product-specific emissions factors where available. This dataset is a perfect example of how we can help close that gap for UK electricity.

It’s all part of our vision to make carbon accounting accessible without environmental expertise, while still giving companies a path to deeper precision and better decision-making.

What’s Next

We plan to keep the dataset updated each year and we’re also exploring how to expand this approach to other high-impact spend categories like gas, freight, and cloud computing.

In the meantime, if you're using our platform, the emissions factors are already integrated. If you’re not, feel free to download and use the data however you need. All we ask is that if you spot anything missing or want to contribute, drop us a line.

Let’s make it easier for every business to take carbon reporting seriously, starting with data that should have been easier to find in the first place.
